During the 1500s, a film-less device was used in sketching for artists. The device consisted of a lightproof box, a lens on one side, and a clear screen on the other. This was known as camera obscura. Over the years, several discoveries have evolved into photography as we know it today. In 1825, French inventor Joseph Nicephore Niepce produced the first permanent photograph.
